Gaurav Gogoi Demands Accountability from CM Himanta After SIT Allegations

On February 8, the Assam Congress launched a strong rebuttal against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, following his press conference regarding the Special Investigation Team (SIT) report. The opposition party criticized the Chief Minister for failing to present any solid evidence to back up allegations of Pakistani connections involving Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi and his family. In a statement, the Assam Congress labeled the Chief Minister’s nearly two-and-a-half-hour press conference as a “complete anti-climax,” arguing that despite high expectations and attention from national media, no proof was provided to support his claims.

Gaurav Gogoi, the Assam Congress president, addressed reporters after the event, describing the Chief Minister’s presentation as a “super flop.” He remarked, “For nearly two and a half hours, the Chief Minister attempted to sell his flop film to the people. Even after all this time, he failed to convince journalists. Forget about evidence; he couldn’t even adequately respond to their questions.” Gogoi raised concerns about why the SIT report, submitted back on September 10, remained untouched for almost six months before being presented to the Cabinet on February 7.

“If the issue was so serious, why did the Chief Minister sit on the report for six months? Why was it buried during that time? Now, as elections approach and we have raised the question of 12,000 bighas of land linked to the Chief Minister’s family, he suddenly decides to unveil this report,” Gogoi accused. He asserted that Congress had already made evidence regarding the land issue public within three days, producing documents concerning 3,000 bighas of land, while the press conference demonstrated that the Chief Minister lacked information.

Additionally, Gogoi claimed that Congress possesses documentary evidence about the alleged 12,000 bighas of land, with further details being uploaded by the public on the ‘Who is Himanta Biswa Sarma’ website. Jitendra Singh, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary in charge of Assam, criticized the Chief Minister for making allegations against the family of former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, which included targeting an eight-year-old child. Singh stated, “Politics is one thing, but making baseless personal allegations against a respected family is deeply reprehensible. Everyone in Assam knows the significant role Tarun Gogoi has played in Himanta Biswa Sarma’s political journey.”

Former Rajya Sabha MP Ripun Bora also dismissed the press conference as a “super flop,” questioning the SIT’s credibility. He noted that the Chief Minister confessed that the SIT could only investigate about 20 percent of the alleged Pakistan connection. “If this was a national security issue, why did the government remain silent for six months?” Bora asked. Debabrata Saikia, the Leader of Opposition, remarked that the press conference diminished the dignity of the Chief Minister’s office. Meanwhile, Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress president Mira Borthakur suggested that the public was growing “fed up with the Chief Minister’s theatrics.”

Bedabrat Bora, chairman of the APCC Media and Communications Department, labeled the delayed press conference as an “anti-climax” that undermined the government’s credibility before the national media.
