Digboi Workers Rally for Justice: Demands for Labour Code Rollback
Hundreds of contract workers gathered in Digboi on Sunday, participating in a large bike rally to protest the new labor codes proposed by the Central government. The rally aimed to garner public support for a nationwide general strike scheduled for February 12.
The protesters voiced concerns that the new regulations would jeopardize job security, allowing employers to dismiss workers at their discretion and leaving employees in vulnerable positions. They argued that these changes would strip workers of their rightful wages and threaten the stability of trade unions.
“Previously, there were 19 labor laws, which the Centre has now merged into four codes. This is why all the contractual labor unions at the Digboi Refinery have taken to the streets,” one protester stated. “Through this event, we want to send a clear message to the Central government: if the labor codes are not repealed, we will escalate our agitation.”
Nagen Chutia, General Secretary of the Petroleum and Gas Workers Federation of India, criticized the Modi government for implementing these codes to benefit major corporations such as Adani and Ambani. He warned that neglecting to repeal the codes would negatively impact not just workers, but also the broader social fabric of India.
The rally also emphasized local issues, including demands for increased production capacity at the Digboi Refinery, reliable access to safe drinking water for residents, and improvements in educational facilities with quality schools and colleges for students in the region.
