Shocking Discovery: Nearly 3,000 Voters Left Out in Ernakulam-Don’t Let Your Voice Go Silent!
In a significant development ahead of the final voters’ list publication in Ernakulam district, close to 3,000 individuals have been found ineligible to vote, many of whom are deceased. The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) hearing process is nearing completion, with just six days left until the official deadline. As of Sunday, official figures indicate that 2,994 people across all 14 Assembly constituencies have been deemed ineligible. This leaves under 700 voters still pending review, according to district officials.
The ineligible voters include individuals who passed away during the enumeration period, those who have relocated to other constituencies, and others who have renounced their Indian citizenship. Preliminary data suggests that 154 of these voters have acquired citizenship in other countries. Thripunithura Assembly constituency leads in the number of ineligible voters, accounting for 624 individuals, followed by Kalamassery with 291 and Piravom with 275. In contrast, Kunnathunad has the fewest ineligible voters, totaling just 71.
Concerns about a large number of voters being removed from the rolls due to a rushed SIR process may be unfounded. “We have been taking proactive steps throughout the exercise, and efforts are ongoing at the booth level to add new voters and ensure that no eligible person is left out,” a district official stated, highlighting the meticulous approach being taken.
During this phase, over 406,000 voters in the district were flagged for verification. Among these were those classified as unmapped, whose records could not be matched to the base list from 2002, and others identified with inconsistencies, such as errors in personal details. The SIR is designed to ensure the integrity of the electoral rolls, reinforcing public confidence ahead of upcoming elections.
As of February 4, 19,021 individuals have been removed from the voter rolls statewide following similar hearings. With the finalization of the voter list looming, officials are optimistic that the process will yield an accurate and up-to-date reflection of eligible voters in the district.
As this story unfolds, it highlights the crucial effort to maintain electoral integrity and the importance of accurate voter registration in Kerala.
