The Government of India’s Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare has appointed a Coimbatore farmer to a newly established committee aimed at evaluating and improving the operations of Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) in Tamil Nadu. Ranganathan, treasurer of the Coimbatore unit of the Tamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam and Director of the Business Division at the Palamalai Farmers’ Producer Company Limited, will serve as one of two FPO representatives on the committee. He is joined by G.K. Nagaraj, Director of Agri Innovative India Limited, in this important role.

The committee, which is set to be guided by the Joint Secretary of Marketing from the Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, includes senior officials from several notable organizations. These include the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED), and the Small Farmers’ Agri-Business Consortium (SFAC). Notable experts like R. Selvarajan, the Director of ICAR-National Research Centre for Banana in Tiruchi, and Balasubramanian, the CEO of VANAM NGO, are also part of the team.

This committee is tasked with a thorough analysis of the challenges confronting FPOs in Tamil Nadu. It will examine various dimensions such as institutional governance, management practices, business operations, sustainability, technical assistance, and the complexities of aggregation, value addition, and market access. In particular, the committee will delve into sector-specific concerns surrounding banana, turmeric, coconut, tapioca, natural farming systems, and organic farming products.

A significant objective of the initiative is to identify and propose solutions for the operational and structural challenges faced by these organizations. The committee’s findings are expected to enhance the effectiveness of FPOs, which play a crucial role in empowering farmers through collective bargaining and resource sharing.

The committee is under pressure to deliver its first report within two months, making a timeline critical to ensuring that necessary improvements can be implemented swiftly. The scrutiny placed on FPOs is reflective of the increasing recognition of their importance in the agricultural ecosystem, particularly in fostering sustainability and economic resilience among farmers in India.

With rising interest in agricultural innovation and community-led business models, this initiative is poised to provide actionable insights that can bolster the farming sector in Tamil Nadu. The collective effort from various stakeholders highlights a dedication to improving the functionality and impact of FPOs, ensuring they meet the needs of farmers while contributing to regional agricultural stability and growth.

As this dialogue unfolds, all eyes will be on the committee’s progress and recommendations, as its outcomes could significantly shape the future of agricultural practices in the state.
