Close Call: Air India and IndiGo Planes Narrowly Avoid Collision at Mumbai Airport
Wingtips of Air India and IndiGo planes touched each other at Mumbai Airport on Tuesday evening, prompting both aircraft to be grounded for inspections. Fortunately, all passengers on board were unharmed.
The incident occurred around 7:30 PM when an Air India Airbus A320, waiting on the taxiway for takeoff on flight AI2732 to Coimbatore, made contact with an IndiGo Airbus A320 taxiing after landing. The two planes were maneuvering on parallel runways at one of India’s busiest airports.
Officials from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) are currently investigating the event. An Air India spokesperson reported that their aircraft suffered damage to its wingtip but assured that all passengers were safely disembarked before the aircraft was grounded for further technical checks.
IndiGo confirmed that their flight 6E791 from Hyderabad experienced a similar issue while taxiing. A spokesperson stated that their passengers also disembarked safely after parking, and maintenance inspections are being conducted on the aircraft.
The civil aviation ministry elaborated that the Air India plane was taxiing from C1 towards M4 when both aircraft made contact with their right wingtips. As a precaution, the planes returned to their bays for thorough inspections. Details regarding the number of passengers aboard both flights remain unclear at this time.
