Urgent Action Needed: HC Demands Comprehensive Report on Kalligudi Quarrying Operations to Protect Our Future

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has called on the Tamil Nadu government to respond to a public interest litigation that seeks to halt quarrying operations in several villages of Kalligudi, located in Madurai district. A Division Bench, comprising Justices G. Jayachandran and K. K. Ramakrishnan, has instructed the State to present a detailed report outlining the licenses issued for these operations, along with relevant information regarding their duration and the permissible limits of quarrying.

The petition was submitted by local residents G. Abel Moorthy and U. Chellapandi, who highlighted the extensive reliance of the community on agriculture for their livelihood. They raised serious concerns about illegal stone quarrying activities in villages such as Achankulam, Kallanai, Ulagani, Kurayar, and Thirumal. According to the petitioners, these operations have led to significant environmental degradation, manifesting as dust, air, and noise pollution, which adversely affect local crops.

Moreover, the use of explosives in the quarrying process poses a direct threat to nearby farmland and farming practices. The petitioners noted that unauthorized quarrying activities occur alarmingly close to water bodies, raising concerns about the potential for further environmental damage. The transportation of minerals by heavy vehicles has reportedly damaged crucial water channels, disrupting vital pathways for the community.

Residents are increasingly facing health issues due to the indiscriminate quarrying, which often exceeds permitted limits. Efforts to address these challenges through previous representations made to local authorities have reportedly gone unanswered, prompting the need for legal intervention. The petitioners are urging the court to mandate the cessation of quarrying operations in these affected villages to safeguard both their health and their agricultural livelihood.

As the situation evolves, the Madurai high court’s engagement underlines the escalating tensions between local development and environmental protection. This case highlights the critical need for regulatory oversight to ensure that natural resources are exploited responsibly while accounting for the welfare of residents dependent on agriculture.

With the court awaiting the State’s response, this ongoing litigation marks a pivotal moment for the communities of Kalligudi, encapsulating broader concerns regarding sustainable practices and community rights in resource management. As further developments unfold, stakeholders are keenly watching how the judicial system will address these pressing environmental and social issues.

Madurai residents and environmental advocates continue to press for action, emphasizing the importance of balancing economic activities like quarrying with the urgent need for ecological preservation and community health. The outcome of this case could set a significant precedent for similar disputes across Tamil Nadu, reflecting a growing emphasis on accountability and sustainability in the extraction industries.
