Justice for Victims: Meghalaya Rights Panel Demands Compensation in Farmhouse Raid
The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has recommended compensation payments in 15 cases involving alleged human rights violations that occurred during a police raid at Rimpu Bagan in the West Garo Hills district, approximately four years ago. This raid, executed by police on July 22, 2022, followed claims that the location was operating as a brothel.
In its ruling, the Commission instructed the Principal Secretary of the Meghalaya Home (Police) Department to provide Rs 50,000 each to the complainants involved in these 15 cases. The MHRC noted that a total of 30 cases had been filed with the Commission concerning the raid, but 15 of those cases were later withdrawn by the complainants.
Rimpu Bagan, the site of the contentious raid, is a farmhouse owned by a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who has a history connected to militant activities.
