Recently, Instagram content creator Shashank Alshi highlighted that SPF 30 blocks 97% of the sun’s rays, SPF 50 blocks 98%, and SPF 60 also blocks 98%. He emphasized, “They don’t block more than that. You don’t really need more than SPF 50.”
To clarify this claim, Dr. Shweta Mishra, a facial cosmetic and aesthetic surgeon at Sharva Clinic in New Delhi, stressed the importance of sun protection for maintaining healthy skin. SPF measures how long you can stay in the sun without burning. According to Dr. Mishra, “A higher SPF provides more extended protection.” For instance, if your skin burns after 10 minutes of exposure, using SPF 30 theoretically allows you to remain in the sun for 300 minutes without burning.
However, Dr. Rinky Kapoor, a consultant dermatologist at The Esthetic Clinics in Mumbai, pointed out that it’s a common misconception that a higher SPF always equates to better protection. She noted that dermatologists often recommend SPF 50 for its adequate protection, making extremely high SPFs unnecessary. Applying sunscreen correctly is essential for maximizing its benefits.
It is crucial to recognize that “no sunscreen can block 100% of UV rays.” Therefore, regular reapplication every 2-3 hours and taking additional protective measures, such as wearing hats and sunglasses, is vital, according to Dr. Mishra. While a higher SPF offers additional protection, it does not permit unlimited sun exposure.
“Always apply sunscreen generously and avoid sun exposure during peak hours to keep your skin healthy and protected from the sun’s damaging effects,” Dr. Mishra advised. If someone has never used SPF before, consulting a dermatologist can be beneficial, added Dr. Kapoor.
Your dermatologist may suggest an optimal sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher that suits your skin type and conditions. It’s essential to apply a generous layer to your face, hands, neck, and the backs of your ears for effective protection. Notably, sunscreen should not be skipped even on cloudy days or while indoors, as UV rays can penetrate through windows.
