Revolutionary 6-Lane Replacement of Mumbai’s Tilak Bridge Set to Open Soon!

Mumbai’s Dadar district is witnessing a significant infrastructural upgrade with the near-completion of a new six-lane bridge that will replace the century-old Tilak Bridge. Current progress on the project is around 70%, with a partial opening anticipated in 2028.

The original Tilak Bridge, constructed in 1925, has served as a vital connector for east-west railway tracks in Dadar. However, in 2019, local authorities deemed the bridge structurally unsound, prompting plans for its replacement. To mitigate traffic disruptions during the construction, the old bridge will remain operational until the new structure is completed, after which it will be demolished.

The construction of the new bridge is being carried out in two phases. The first phase, expected to be completed by April 2026, will feature three lanes to accommodate vehicle traffic. Currently, 70% of the construction progress has been made, including ongoing work on the superstructure and grinder launching. The second phase will expand the bridge to a full six lanes, projected to be finished within 18 months, by 2028.

Once completed, the new structure will stretch 600 meters and will be significantly wider than the existing bridge, improving traffic flow and increasing vehicle capacity. This project is under the purview of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC), with an estimated cost of Rs. 375 crore. The upgrades are anticipated to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance safety for commuters.
