Siddaramaiah Makes History: Karnataka’s Longest Serving CM Amid Comparisons with Yediyurappa
Siddaramaiah made history on Wednesday by becoming the longest-serving Chief Minister of Karnataka, surpassing the previous record of 2,792 days set by his party colleague, Devaraj Urs. This milestone comes as the Congress party finds itself embroiled in speculation regarding the potential reshuffling of its leadership, particularly as it reaches the halfway point of its five-year term on November 20.
Reflecting on his achievement, Siddaramaiah expressed uncertainty about his future in politics, stating, “One has to have the blessings of people to be in politics. With the blessings of the people, I have come so far; I don’t know how long I will be there. I will continue in the future too and remain in politics until I have the blessings of the people.” He indicated satisfaction with his administration’s performance during a media briefing.
In response to Siddaramaiah’s record, the BJP criticized the 77-year-old leader, claiming he had accomplished nothing significant and accusing him of depleting the state’s finances. In retaliation, Siddaramaiah dismissed the opposition’s comments, calling them “experts in lying.”
He challenged the BJP, questioning, “Who brought the SCP/TSP (Special Component Plan and Tribal Sub-Plan) act? Did they (BJP) do it? Did they provide reservation in promotions? Who introduced the Anna Bhagya scheme? How can they say I did nothing? They should ask the people what we have done.”
Meanwhile, BJP leader B.S. Yediyurappa accused Siddaramaiah’s government of corruption, acknowledging Devaraj Urs for his commendable work. Yediyurappa asserted that the two leaders’ administrative styles differed significantly. He stated, “Things cannot be compared with Devaraj Urs, who had done good work. At a time when this government is immersed in corruption, people won’t appreciate such claims of big achievements.”
Looking ahead, Yediyurappa expressed confidence about the BJP’s success in the upcoming local body elections, stating that party workers were motivated and ready to campaign vigorously.
