Apple Slashes Vision Pro Production: A Bold Move Amid Disappointing Consumer Demand

Apple has significantly reduced its manufacturing and marketing efforts for the Vision Pro headset, as consumer demand has not met initial expectations, according to multiple reports from the Financial Times. The International Data Corporation (IDC) revealed that Apple’s Chinese manufacturing partner, Luxshare, halted production at the start of last year after shipping approximately 390,000 units during the device’s 2024 launch. Additionally, data from Sensor Tower indicates that Apple has slashed its digital advertising spending for the Vision Pro by over 95% year-to-date in key markets such as the US and UK, reflecting a reevaluation of the product’s near-term commercial potential.

Although Apple has not publicly shared specific sales figures for the Vision Pro, IDC estimates that shipments could plummet to around 45,000 units in the final quarter of 2025-a time traditionally dominated by iPhone, iPad, and MacBook sales. Priced at $3,499, the Vision Pro is currently available in 13 countries, yet there are no plans for international expansion within the year. Analysts cited by the Financial Times attribute the product’s low adoption rates to several factors, including its high price point, bulky design, and a limited selection of apps optimized for its VisionOS platform, with approximately 3,000 apps currently available.

The downturn in the VR market is not solely an Apple issue. Counterpoint Research reports a 14% year-on-year decline in the overall virtual reality headset market. Meta’s Quest devices still dominate with about 80% market share, despite recent cuts to Meta’s own digital marketing efforts. In response to user feedback, Apple upgraded the Vision Pro to an M5 version launched in October, boasting enhanced processing power, longer battery life, and a redesigned headband. Additionally, a more affordable, lower-spec version of the headset is expected to launch within the year.

Despite gaining traction in enterprise applications like pilot training and surgical procedures, the lukewarm consumer interest raises concerns among investors about Apple’s ability to transform its ambitious platform into sustained market demand. As the tech giant navigates the complexities of the virtual reality landscape, its future success hinges not only on innovative product features but also on understanding and addressing consumer needs.

As Apple recalibrates its strategy for the Vision Pro, the industry will be watching closely to see how it responds to both consumer preferences and competitive pressures in the shaping VR market. While the potential for enterprise use exists, the challenges in the consumer segment could limit the headset’s growth trajectory in the coming years.
