On December 31, a seemingly routine handshake between Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and the Speaker of Pakistan’s National Assembly, Ayaz Sadiq, has sparked notable attention amidst ongoing tensions between the two nations. The brief encounter occurred during the funeral of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Khaleda Zia in Dhaka, where both leaders were present. This interaction marked one of the few senior-level contacts since diplomatic relations between India and Pakistan soured earlier this year, primarily following the tragic Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives in Jammu and Kashmir.
According to a press release from Pakistan’s National Assembly Secretariat, reported by the Pakistani newspaper Dawn, the handshake was initiated by Jaishankar, who approached Sadiq during the event. Following the Pahalgam attack, Pakistan asserted its commitment to dialogue and cooperation, emphasizing “restraint and cooperative measures,” which included proposals for peace talks and collaborative investigations aimed at preventing escalation.
Representing India at the funeral, Jaishankar conveyed a letter of condolence from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Khaleda Zia’s family. Zia, a significant political figure known for her three terms as Prime Minister and her role as the matriarch of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), passed away after a prolonged illness.
The backdrop of this high-level interaction is the severely strained ties between India and Pakistan, which escalated following the aforementioned terror attack in Pahalgam. In response, India adopted a series of calibrated diplomatic and strategic measures to bolster national security.
