India’s Stance: Himanta Challenges Bangladesh Leader’s Controversial Remarks
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma condemned recent remarks by a Bangladeshi political leader advocating for the separation of India’s northeastern states. He described these comments as “irresponsible and dangerous,” asserting that India would not remain silent on such issues. Sarma’s statements came in response to Hasnat Abdullah, a senior leader of Bangladesh’s newly formed National Citizen Party, who suggested that Dhaka should aim to “isolate” India’s Northeast and even support separatist elements if New Delhi destabilized Bangladesh.
During an event in Lumding, Sarma noted that similar provocative remarks have been repeatedly made from the Bangladeshi side over the past year. He pointed out that some voices in Bangladesh have called for the northeastern states to be detached from India and merged with their neighboring country. “India is a very big country, a nuclear power and the world’s fourth-largest economy. How can Bangladesh even think along these lines?” he stated, emphasizing that such ideas are not only incorrect but also reflect a dangerous mindset that should not be encouraged.
Sarma urged for a strong Indian stance against these narratives, warning against any support for those who continue to make such incendiary claims. “If this kind of behavior continues, India will not remain silent,” he declared. Abdullah had previously claimed that the Northeast is geographically vulnerable due to its reliance on the narrow Siliguri Corridor, often referred to as the ‘Chicken’s Neck,’ for its connectivity with the rest of India.
The Chief Minister’s remarks come amid rising concerns about regional security and escalating cross-border rhetoric relating to India’s northeastern region, which shares extensive borders with Bangladesh and other neighboring countries.
