The crisis at Tezpur University (TU) has escalated significantly, as the Tezpur University Teachers’ Association (TUTA) emphatically rejected Vice-Chancellor Shambhu Nath Singh’s “Appeal to Stakeholders” for forgiveness and unity. In a harsh official response, TUTA dismissed Singh’s narrative as “false and self-serving,” claiming that the unrest on campus stems directly from his “repeated financial, administrative, and recruitment irregularities.”
TUTA’s response, published shortly after Singh’s appeal, demands his immediate removal and a comprehensive investigation, asserting that his continued leadership is “untenable and against the collective conscience of this institution.” The association has leveled serious accusations at Singh, stating that his tenure of over two years has resulted in a troubling breakdown of governance, transparency, and accountability. They assert having documented evidence of significant misconduct, which has already been submitted to both the State Government and Central fact-finding committees that visited the campus.
The allegations include serious financial irregularities in procurement, improper use of funds, travel expenditures, and gross administrative negligence, alongside blatantly irregular recruitment practices. TUTA President Kusum Bania highlighted, “You have committed serious financial irregularities… and gross administrative negligence.”
Additionally, they revealed that records indicate Singh was absent from the station for 388 days over the span of two years and five months, labeling this an “alarming display of irresponsibility and dereliction of duty.” The faculty association unequivocally rejected Singh’s appeal, which promised no punitive measures against protesting students and staff while calling for “forgiveness.” TUTA characterized this approach as an attempt to “mask serious allegations under the guise of ‘forgiveness’ and ‘unity’,” and indicative of a “repeated pattern of deception and evasion.”
Singh framed the demonstrations as a “spontaneous outpouring of grief” following the unfortunate passing of Zubeen Garg, coupled with moments of frustration. TUTA responded by stating that the entire university community-faculty, students, non-teaching staff, and alumni-has “unanimously resolved not to allow your return to campus.”
The association concluded their statement by asserting their commitment to restoring the university’s credibility. “Tezpur University deserves ethical and visionary leadership, not one mired in corruption, manipulation, and administrative chaos,” they declared, emphasizing, “We do not need a corrupt Vice Chancellor like you in our University.”
Earlier, Singh had issued his own appeal for reconciliation and unity amid the ongoing unrest. In his letter to the university community, he expressed a desire for “sincere and respectful dialogue” with all stakeholders to address the challenges facing the institution. Reflecting on recent personal difficulties, Singh stated, “If given the choice, I would always choose forgiveness over resentment, as it represents the stronger and more meaningful path. My focus now is on reconciliation, restoring trust, and moving forward together as one united community.”
