China Slams Trump’s 130% Tariffs as ‘Destructive’: A Warning to the US on Economic Confrontation

China reaffirmed its commitment to resist U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent threat of a 100% tariff, urging dialogue over coercion in the ongoing trade disputes. The Chinese Commerce Ministry issued a statement emphasizing that “threatening with high tariffs at every turn is not the right way to get along with China,” signaling its readiness to “take corresponding measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests” if the U.S. persists in its current course. The ministry’s message advocates for resolving conflicts through constructive discussions rather than escalating tensions.

In a subtle response, Trump modified his tone yet maintained his stance on the demands. Vice President Mike Pence appeared to advise China against any aggressive retaliation. Trump’s administration is also contemplating additional measures, including imposing export controls on “critical software,” although details remain vague. This has fueled accusations from both sides of violating the spirit of their existing trade truce by introducing new restrictions.

On his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump addressed Chinese President Xi Jinping directly, attempting to reassure him, stating, “Don’t worry about China, it will all be fine!” He acknowledged that President Xi was having a “bad moment,” adding that “the U.S. wants to help China, not hurt it.” During his departure for Israel, Trump underscored his good relationship with Xi yet acknowledged that the U.S. had responded with measures that were tougher than China’s.

Trade negotiations also hinge on China’s dominance in rare earth minerals, with the nation producing nearly 70% of the world’s supply and managing about 90% of global processing. These essential materials are used in a range of products, from electric vehicles to consumer electronics, making access to them a pivotal issue in U.S.-China relations. China’s export restrictions impact not only American manufacturers but also industries in Europe and other regions.

Furthermore, China’s Commerce Ministry criticized the U.S. for imposing new port fees on Chinese vessels, effective Tuesday. This move has prompted China to retaliate with similar charges on American ships, further escalating trade tensions.

As the situation develops, both nations continue to exchange harsh words while significant economic interests hang in the balance, reflecting the complexities of international trade relations. analysts will continue to monitor the implications of these tariffs and export controls on global markets as both nations delve deeper into economic diplomacy.
