R.N. Ravi, the Governor of Tamil Nadu and Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Open University, presented certificates to graduates during the university’s 16th convocation held in Chennai on Thursday. Among those recognized was M. Sobana, a student from the university. The event also featured esteemed guest Ami Upadhyay, Vice-Chancellor of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University from Gujarat, who delivered the convocation address.
In her speech, Prof. Upadhyay emphasized the imperative of combining the strengths of Classical Tamil pedagogy with essential English skills to prepare graduates for the demands of artificial intelligence (AI). She remarked, “Our graduates will be exceptionally well prepared to use AI when the strength of Classical Tamil pedagogy is combined with essential English skills.” The Vice-Chancellor highlighted the longstanding traditions of Classical Tamil education, which focus on logical thinking, disciplined thought, and clarity of expression. According to her, these attributes, when paired with English proficiency, empower graduates not only for personal advancement but also in promoting innovation, research, and business growth.
Prof. Upadhyay also took this opportunity to stress the significance of preserving ancient Indian languages, declaring, “Indians should be proud of the fact that out of the seven most ancient languages, two are from India-Sanskrit and Tamil.” She pointed out that the National Education Policy 2020 underscores the importance of mother tongues and regional languages in education.
Addressing the widening gap between technological access and linguistic capabilities, she warned that the future will favor those who can effectively instruct AI and critically assess its outputs. “Institutions like Tamil Nadu Open University are uniquely positioned to pioneer this integration by aligning AI training with language learning focused on reasoning, clarity, and precision,” she asserted.
Prof. Upadhyay stressed the importance of retaining natural intelligence alongside AI advancements. “When we walk with AI, we should always remember that natural intelligence has greater importance,” she said. She noted that we are entering an era where AI is dramatically transforming various fields and emphasized that clear thinking, precise expression, and effective reasoning will be crucial in leveraging technology’s power.
Governor R.N. Ravi presided over the ceremony, which saw a total of 7,972 graduates receiving their degrees. This milestone reflects not just individual achievement, but also the growing influence of technology and education in shaping the future of higher learning in India.
