Transforming Connectivity: Major Road Expansions to Boost Access to Railway Station, Temple, and Industrial Area
The single-lane road behind the Ennore Thermal Power Plant in Tiruvallur district is set for an upgrade to a two-lane facility, aiming to alleviate traffic congestion in the surrounding industrial area. Sources from the Highways Department have confirmed that the 4.6-kilometer route connecting Chepakkam and Mouthambedu, near Minjur, will be significantly more efficient once widened. “This upgrade will be crucial during peak traffic hours, providing an alternative route for motorists and enhancing safety for local vehicles,” remarked a department official.
In addition to improving the road for everyday use, the widening project is designed to facilitate emergency responses and ensure better access for industrial traffic in the area. The initiative includes enhancements to existing culverts, enabling better water flow in nearby streams. The total investment for this project is estimated at Rs. 10.50 crore, and it will be executed alongside two other key roadway improvements.
The second project involves the 8-kilometer Chinna Kavanam to Perumbedu Road, which begins just 600 meters from the railway underpass. Of this stretch, 2.8 kilometers will be widened from its current width of 5.5 meters to 7 meters, with an allocation of Rs. 3.21 crore for the works. A local official noted that this widening is timely, as “the Balasubramaniaswamy Temple at Perumbedu draws significant crowds on Tuesdays, Saturdays, and during festivals. This road improvement will greatly aid the devotees traveling to the temple.”
The third facet of the project focuses on the Athipattu Railway Station Road, which will be expanded to a width of 5.5 meters over a distance of 1.6 kilometers, up from its current 3.75 meters. This enhancement is estimated to cost Rs. 1.67 crore and aims to improve accessibility for travelers using the station.
Tenders for these developments have been issued, and preliminary work-including marking and grubbing-is anticipated to start by December. This initiative, part of a broader strategy to improve transportation infrastructure in the region, is expected to greatly contribute to local traffic safety and efficiency, addressing a pressing need in the rapidly developing industrial corridor.
As these projects progress, residents and commuters alike are optimistic about the changes, which promise to enhance connectivity and promote sustainable growth in Tiruvallur district. The collaboration of local authorities and the Highways Department reflects a committed effort to modernize infrastructure in response to increasing traffic demands.
With these improvements underway, the years ahead may see a marked transformation in the accessibility and functionality of the transport network in this vital part of Chennai’s milieu.
