Empowering Change: Women’s Panel Chief Demands More Efficient Complaint Redressal Mechanisms for Justice

Kerala Women’s Commission Chairperson P. Sathidevi has emphasized the urgent need for improving complaint redressal mechanisms to combat workplace atrocities against women. Speaking during a seminar on the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (POSH) Act, 2013, in Kozhikode, Sathidevi expressed concern about the insufficient implementation of the mandatory complaint systems required in many establishments.

The seminar, organized in collaboration with the Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ), highlighted the necessity for workplaces to adhere to the regulations set forth by the POSH Act. Ms. Sathidevi pointed out that while the Department of Women and Child Development has introduced a dedicated portal to facilitate compliance, many workplaces have yet to register. “The response to this initiative has not been satisfactory,” she stated. “More establishments need to utilize the portal. The Commission is prepared to intervene to improve this situation.”

Sathidevi warned of a troubling shift in societal attitudes toward women. She noted that the signals indicating this shift have become increasingly visible, underlining the crucial requirement for every woman to have a secure working environment. “Every woman deserves a safe workplace,” she asserted.

The seminar was presided over by E.P. Mohammed, president of the Calicut Press Club, and included key figures such as District Information Officer C.P. Abdul Kareem, along with members of the KUWJ state committee. Legal-cum-probation officer V.L. Aneesha provided a detailed explanation of the POSH Act and its implications for workplace policies.

The necessity for robust and efficient mechanisms to address complaints of harassment reflects broader societal efforts to ensure women’s safety and dignity in professional settings. As discussions around the POSH Act continue to evolve, it remains imperative for organizations to not only understand but also implement the necessary protocols for safeguarding women in the workplace.

The Kerala Women’s Commission remains committed to advocating for women’s rights and enhancing the protective frameworks available to them. The call to action is clear: without effective complaint mechanisms and a commitment to change, progress toward safe work environments for women will be hindered.

As conversations around workplace harassment persist, the adoption and enforcement of the POSH Act become increasingly vital. Stakeholders across sectors are urged to take proactive steps to create a safer, more equitable professional landscape in Kerala and beyond.
