Nagaland’s High-Level Committee: Urgent Review of RMSA Teachers’ Grievances
The Nagaland government has announced the formation of a High-Level Committee to address the concerns of the RMSA 2016 batch of teachers, resulting in the suspension of their ongoing protest. The teachers, who have been advocating for a proper pay scale, have agreed to participate in the committee as proposed by the state, leading to a temporary halt of their sit-in demonstration, which reached its 12th day on September 23.
During a meeting attended by Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, Abhijit Sinha, and Home Commissioner Kevileno Angami, the teachers accepted their role in the committee, which is set to include members from the School Education Department, Directorate of School Education, Samagra Shiksha, Finance Department, and the Justice and Law Department. Additionally, representatives from the All Nagaland School Teachers’ Association (ANSTA) and the RMSA 2016 batch will also join the committee.
To streamline efforts, a Sub-Committee headed by the Secretary of the School Education Department will be established. This group will consist of officials from the Directorate of School Education, Samagra Shiksha, two ANSTA representatives, and three from the RMSA 2016 batch. The Sub-Committee is tasked with reviewing the teachers’ demands and drafting a preliminary report for the High-Level Committee, aiming for completion within six months.
After the meeting, RMSA Spokesperson Renbemo L. Patton communicated to the media that the decision to suspend the protest stems from assurances made by the government regarding the review of their demands. Key issues highlighted include the integration of RMSA 2016 teachers and a pay scale aligned with post-creation notifications, with the committee expected to finalize its recommendations within half a year, subject to approvals from relevant government departments.
Patton emphasized the necessity for the committee’s findings to align with existing court judgments. He also noted that while the government has agreed to consider salary increases, these adjustments will serve as a provisional measure until a pending review petition is resolved. He asserted that their conditions were accepted and emphasized the need for timely implementation.
While the protest has not been officially called off, Patton indicated it is being held “in abeyance,” stressing that it will resume if the government fails to honor its commitments. He concluded with a reminder that the government must act diligently and thoughtfully in implementing the agreed-upon charter of demands.
