SHILLONG, Sep 23: A recent Supreme Court ruling threatens the job security of at least 10,000 teachers in Meghalaya who have not passed the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET). According to Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, the Supreme Court’s order, issued on September 1, mandates that all teachers must clear the TET within two years.
Rymbui expressed his confusion over the ruling, stating that he has been engaging in discussions with various teacher associations and officials from the Law Department and other relevant agencies. “We are considering collaborating with other state governments to petition the Supreme Court for a review of this decision,” he said.
He noted that while the ruling allows teachers with five years of service remaining to retain their positions, they will not be eligible for promotions. The minister also indicated that the verdict will affect teachers retroactively. Concerned that the ruling could impact between 10,000 to 15,000 educators in Meghalaya, he has instructed District School Education Officers (DSEOs) to gather details about the teachers and their qualifications.
Rymbui recognized the significant contributions of teachers over the past 25 to 30 years and is actively seeking feedback from various stakeholders on potential next steps. Importantly, the Supreme Court’s ruling does not apply to minority institutions, and the matter has been referred to a constitutional bench.
While Rymbui acknowledged the need for qualified teachers to ensure every child receives quality education, he emphasized the government’s commitment to preventing job losses for teachers. “However, we will have to conduct the TET exams,” he added.
