Controversy Erupts Over Beef Ban at Kochi Canara Bank Branch
A branch of Canara Bank in Kochi has become a stage for dramatic protests following an alleged beef ban imposed by the newly appointed regional manager from Bihar. Frustrated by this decision, employees voiced their discontent by organizing a protest where they consumed beef, thereby demonstrating their opposition to the regional manager’s directive.
According to reports from India Today, the incident sparked considerable outrage among staff members, who initially intended to challenge the manager over accusations of mental harassment towards employees. However, the situation escalated after the beef ban, with protesters serving beef and parotta, a flatbread, outside the bank’s premises.
Support for the protest came from several political figures in Kerala, including KT Jaleel, an independent MLA aligned with the Left. He expressed solidarity with the demonstrators, stating, “No Sangh Parivar agendas would be allowed in Kerala.”
A tweet capturing the moment conveyed the collective response: a local staff member declared the ban with a mix of humor and resistance, suggesting instead a “Beef Festival” as a counteraction to the ban. The tweet humorously highlighted the resilience of the Malayali spirit by stating that resistance often leads to creative expressions.
In a Facebook post, Jaleel urged that personal choices regarding food and thought shouldn’t be dictated by authority figures, asserting that the people have the right to oppose fascist ideologies openly without fear of repercussions. He emphasized the enduring spirit of solidarity among communists against any attempts to impose divisive agendas.
A leader from the Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI), SS Anil, weighed in on the issue, stating that the canteen had been serving beef on certain days. He pointed out that the bank operates under constitutional guidelines and stressed that food preferences are personal choices. He clarified that the protest was not about forcing anyone to consume beef but rather a demonstration against the manager’s directive.
This protest comes in a broader context where Kerala has previously witnessed various beef-related protests, particularly in response to a central government order that restricted cattle sales for slaughter in 2017. However, this current incident stands out for its unique approach and community involvement, capturing significant public and political attention.
