A Chennai court has sentenced YouTuber Savukku Shankar to three years in prison in a case filed by former Sun TV news anchor and advocate Mahalakshmi. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sivashakthi said on Tuesday that the charge against Shankar under Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act had been proved. The court also granted his counsel 30 days to file an appeal before a higher court.
Mahalakshmi filed the original complaint in 2013, alleging that Shankar had published defamatory remarks about her on his “Savukku” website. She later approached the Egmore court, alleging that Shankar and his associates had threatened her and fabricated documents in connection with the dispute.
During the trial, Mahalakshmi’s side argued that Shankar had intentionally made defamatory allegations against her and issued threats. Shankar’s counsel denied the allegations and described the complaints and charges against him as false.
The conviction comes more than a decade after Mahalakshmi’s complaint. It is separate from other criminal cases involving Shankar in recent years, including proceedings related to comments made on social media and allegations in his broadcasts and online posts.
Shankar runs the “Savukku” platform and has been a prominent, often controversial voice in Tamil Nadu’s political discourse.
