Nagaland’s Rural Development and SIRD Minister, Metsubo Jamir, addressed the Naga community on August 28 during the inaugural session of the 31st General Conference of the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) in Tseminyu, urging them to unite in their pursuit of progress and a better future. He emphasized the importance of collective action in overcoming geographical and social divisions that have historically hindered the Naga people.
Jamir remarked that the NSF has been a steadfast symbol of unity among the Naga family, reinforcing a vision of inclusivity. He noted that gatherings like the conference serve as a powerful reminder of the shared spirit among the youth, inspiring hope and commitment across global boundaries. He encouraged the NSF to remain rooted in their cultural identity while being open to the world, promoting respect and peace as foundational elements for both local and global leadership.
Highlighting the role of youth, Jamir stated, “The future of our villages, our state, and indeed our region lies in the hands of educated, responsible, and globally conscious individuals like you.” His call for action underlined the necessity for young Nagas to embody informed and compassionate leadership, helping shape the future.
NSF President Medovi Rhi echoed this sentiment, pointing out that disunity within the community-stemming from tribal rivalries, vested interests, and social disparities-poses a significant threat to their collective unity. He urged the community to prioritize unity over personal egos and to come together for the common good, remembering the sacrifices made by their ancestors during times of struggle. Rhi emphasized that if they fail to unite, it would betray the legacy of their forefathers. However, if they succeed in bridging gaps and choosing empathy, they would be building a strong foundation for future generations.
MLA Jwenga Seb addressed the diverse Naga identity, characterized by various tribes, languages, and customs. He highlighted the necessity of united action among the youth and student organizations to address challenges like land preservation, peacekeeping, and community dignity. Seb insisted that collective civic energy is crucial for the progress of their rights and communities, advocating for a platform where differences can be respectfully discussed.
He stressed that no entity thrives in isolation and underscored the need for interconnected policies in education, health, and infrastructure to ensure shared growth. Seb called for inclusive development, advocating for equitable distribution of resources and opportunities so that everyone could contribute to their community’s success.
Concerns over illegal migration were raised by North East Students’ Organization (NESO) chairman Samuel B. Jyrwa, who described it as a longstanding issue affecting the northeastern states since India’s independence in 1947. Jyrwa warned that this threat is real and only exacerbated by population movements, urging the indigenous peoples of the region to be vigilant against this challenge to their culture and identity. He analogized the threat to a “hyper-headed snake,” implying danger that could irreparably affect their way of life.
