Thompson stated, “The shooter expressed hate towards Black people, Mexican people, Christian people, Jewish people… In short, the shooter appeared to hate all of us.” He emphasized that the only individuals Westman seemed to admire were infamous school shooters and mass murderers.
In the aftermath of the attack, authorities recovered three firearms at the scene: a rifle, a shotgun, and a handgun, all of which had been legally purchased in Minnesota. Police also found three shotgun shells, 116 rounds for the rifle, and one live round from the handgun that malfunctioned and became stuck in the chamber.
Westman had personal connections to Annunciation Catholic School, having attended it as a child, and his mother previously worked for the parish.
