
Inspiring Achievement: 8-Year-Old from Gangtok Wins Silver in Taekwondo Championship
An 8-year-old student from Gangtok has made Sikkim proud by clinching a silver medal at a national-level taekwondo championship. Shivani Thapa, a Class IV student at St. Thomas’ School, achieved second place in the Sub-Junior Girls’ 24 kg category during the National Kyorugi Championship, which took place at Palzor Stadium from August 23 to 25.
The championship attracted over 350 athletes from all over India, transforming Gangtok into a temporary hub for martial arts. Organized by the Sikkim Amateur Taekwondo Association (SATA) in partnership with India Taekwondo and Khelo India, the event showcased a wide range of skills and disciplines among participants from diverse backgrounds.
Shivani trains at the Sikkim United Taekwondo Dojang, under the mentorship of senior coaches, including international referee Bijay Gurung and national referee Chultem Palmu Bhutia. Her commitment and consistent training were vital in attaining her podium finish.
Competing successfully on a national stage at such a young age highlights her remarkable talent and resilience. The faculty and her classmates at St. Thomas’ School expressed their pride in her accomplishment, believing that her success may inspire other children to take sports more seriously.
