Devastating Fury: Hurricane Erin Unleashes Catastrophic Floods Across North Carolina

People flocked to the beaches of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, on August 20, 2025, to witness the relentless waves as Hurricane Erin approached the coast. The storm, now a formidable Category 2 hurricane, unleashed strong winds and towering waves that inundated parts of the main highway, causing water to surge beneath beachfront homes. By Thursday, forecasters indicated that the storm could regain strength, potentially escalating to a Category 3 or greater system, though it was not expected to make landfall along the East Coast.

As Erin’s outer bands battered the Outer Banks, the National Hurricane Center in Miami issued tropical storm warnings for parts of the Outer Banks and Virginia. In Bermuda, residents and tourists were urged to stay out of the turbulent waters as hazardous sea conditions were anticipated through Friday.

Highway 12 on Hatteras Island was closed by Wednesday evening due to increased wave surges, effectively severing Ocracoke Island’s access to its ferry terminal. Authorities warned that the highest swells during high tide could isolate several communities along the Outer Banks and create perilous rip currents extending from Florida to New England.

While some beaches in New York City, New Jersey, Maryland, and Delaware were temporarily closed, Long Island and New York City braced for moderate coastal flooding in low-lying areas. Nantucket Island faced the potential for waves exceeding ten feet this week. Still, long-time residents of the Outer Banks seemed unfazed. “I remember taking canoes out of my front yard to get to school, so I don’t think it’s gonna be that bad,” remarked Jacob Throne, a local surf shop employee.

Despite closures, some swimmers ignored safety warnings, leading to rescues of over a dozen people caught in rip currents at North Carolina’s Wrightsville Beach. National Weather Service forecaster Bob Oravec cautioned that rip currents can be unpredictable, emphasizing, “You can be aware all you want. It can still be dangerous.”

North Carolina officials noted that intense winds and waves, estimated at approximately 20 feet, posed a risk of coastal flooding for many beachfront communities. Will Ray, the state’s emergency management director, reiterated the dangerous conditions could be felt far from the hurricane’s eye, particularly given Erin’s expansive size.

As homes along the coast already vulnerable to erosion faced further threats, David Hallac, the superintendent of Cape Hatteras National Seashore, warned of the potential for significant property damage. Many residents remained despite evacuation orders issued for Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands. Boat operator Rob Temple acknowledged, “We probably wouldn’t stay if it was coming directly at us,” highlighting concerns over cut-off access for tourists and deliveries due to washed-out roads.

Erin has emerged as a uniquely large concern, with tropical storm-force winds spreading across roughly 500 miles. Early Thursday, it registered maximum sustained winds of 105 mph and was positioned about 205 miles east-southeast of Cape Hatteras, advancing north-northeast at 17 mph. Meanwhile, the hurricane center monitored additional tropical disturbances in the Atlantic, which could develop into named storms. Climate scientists warn that Atlantic hurricanes are increasingly likely to rapidly intensify due to rising ocean temperatures, making them more dangerous threats to North America.
