Important: Zubeen Kshetra Closed June 22–25 for Ambubachi Mela
The committee that oversees the memorial for late singer Zubeen Garg has announced the site will be closed for three days in observance of Ambubachi Mela, following traditions associated with the annual festival at the Kamakhya Temple. The closure began at 9 p.m. on June 22 and the memorial will remain inaccessible to visitors until the morning of June 26, the Zubeen Kshetra Cleanliness, Management and Monitoring Committee said in a statement.
The committee said the decision mirrors religious customs observed during Ambubachi Mela, when the doors of the Kamakhya Temple are kept closed for three days. The festival is linked to the belief that Goddess Kamakhya undergoes her annual menstrual cycle during this period, and normal worship at the temple is temporarily suspended.
Drawing a parallel with that observance, the committee stated that no lamps or incense will be lit at the Zubeen Garg memorial during the three-day closure. Officials also said the site will be cleaned before rituals and regular access resume after reopening.
In its statement, the committee noted that the memorial has taken on a temple-like significance for admirers and has evolved beyond its original function as a cremation ground. It said the temporary observance is being undertaken in that spirit of reverence.
The committee reaffirmed that the memorial is scheduled to reopen on June 26, following the conclusion of the Ambubachi observance. Visitors and fans were asked to respect the temporary closure and the rituals observed during this period.
