Trump Sounds Alarm: China’s Aggression Could Spell Disaster for Bharat
U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a 50% tariff on Indian goods, prompting India to lean towards its long-time “trade partner,” Russia. On Thursday, External Affairs Minister S. JaiShankar conveyed the message of strengthening commercial ties with Moscow. Simultaneously, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley expressed concerns that Trump’s tariff war could lead to a decline in India-U.S. relations, potentially steering global trade towards China.
According to a report from an American newspaper, Haley advised against treating China and India as interchangeable. She emphasized that the Trump administration should avoid fostering divisions between the two largest democracies over tariffs or America’s stance on the India-Pakistan ceasefire.
Haley pointed out that defeating China through diplomacy and achieving peace through strength is more crucial for the smooth relations between the U.S. and India. During his visit to Moscow, JaiShankar, sitting next to Russian Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov, stated, “We need to work harder and approach our tasks differently.”
He clearly mentioned, “We must provide supply benefits without tariffs and other barriers. We need to enhance connectivity through the international North-South transport corridor, the Northern Sea Route, and the Chennai-Vladivostok Corridor. Additionally, we should streamline financial exchanges between companies on both sides.”
The Foreign Minister confirmed that Moscow had finalized the terms of a free trade agreement in recent meetings, which JaiShankar termed a significant step.
Meanwhile, in response to Trump’s aggression, India’s “friendly” ally Putin has granted more concessions in the oil sector to Russia. Notably, last month, Trump imposed a 25% tariff on India, followed by an additional 25% on Indian imports of Russian oil. In this context, it has been revealed that large quantities of oil have been ordered from Russia for September and October, attributed to a recent price reduction of $3 per barrel for Urals oil. This discount is around 5%.
India imports and consumes millions of barrels of oil daily. Therefore, a $3 reduction per barrel translates to significant savings for India. This cost advantage is expected to lower the country’s foreign currency expenditure. Keeping these benefits in mind, India has significantly increased its oil purchases from Russia, though no official statements have been made by either party regarding this development.
