UN Chief’s Urgent Call for Ceasefire Amid Heart-Wrenching Destruction in Gaza City

The call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza has grown urgent, as the Secretary-General of the United Nations urged reporters at the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) to prioritize diplomatic efforts. He emphasized the necessity of an unconditional release of all hostages and warned against the catastrophic consequences that a military operation in Gaza City could unleash. Currently, an estimated one million residents are still living in Gaza’s largest city, a region described by the Israeli army as a Hamas stronghold. The ongoing conflict, which erupted on October 7, 2023, marked a surge in hostilities following a series of fatal attacks attributed to the militant group.

The UN Chief has also criticized the Israeli government’s recent approval of a previously shelved expansion project for illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank. He stated, “The decision by the Israeli authorities to expand illegal settlement construction, which would divide the West Bank, must be reversed. All settlement construction is a violation of international law.” This development involves plans for over 3,000 new housing units, schools, and a clinic that threaten to isolate East Jerusalem from the West Bank, territory occupied by Israel since the Six-Day War in 1967.

Tragically, the urban landscape in Gaza City is facing significant destruction as military actions continue to wreak havoc. Reports indicate that entire neighborhoods, such as Az Zaytoun, have experienced severe attacks, with more than 50 assaults on residential buildings since August 8. The UN’s human rights office has characterized this as a “systematic destruction.”

The humanitarian crisis is sharpening as acute malnutrition among children in Gaza City skyrockets to 28.5%, meaning that more than one in four children is affected. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) revealed that this rise is a direct consequence of escalating military operations. As of early March, prior to the collapse of a ceasefire, malnutrition rates were a mere 4.5%, showcasing the alarming deterioration of conditions since then.

UNRWA emphasized that vital services in Gaza City are under severe threat. The agency noted that tens of thousands currently reside in its shelters, with many more needing assistance in surrounding areas. Anxiety is mounting regarding the Gaza Field Office compound, a crucial logistics hub in northern Gaza, which is at risk due to ongoing military activities. Last month alone, UNRWA conducted over 100,000 medical consultations, screened about 3,500 children for malnutrition, and delivered clean drinking water to over 220,000 people.

Despite the risks, UNRWA staff continue to provide essential services, including education and psychological support. “While we are committed to staying and delivering aid, all of these services are now at risk as the military operations escalate,” UNRWA warned.

The situation in Gaza is dire, with both humanitarian needs and geopolitical tensions escalating. Calls for diplomacy and accountability remain critical as the world watches the unfolding crisis. As underground clashes persist, the urgent need for peace and stability becomes ever clearer.
