Honoring S.R. Ranganathan: The Visionary Father of Library Science Celebrated at Bharathidasan University
Bharathidasan University recently marked the 133rd National Librarian’s Day, celebrating the birth anniversary of S.R. Ranganathan, revered as the “Father of Library Science” in India. This significant event was co-hosted by the Department of Library and Information Science and the National Service Scheme (NSS) and drew attention from prominent educational leaders.
Among the key attendees were Higher Education Minister Govi Chezhiaan and School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, who served as the chief guests. Minister Poyyamozhi announced the establishment of a new library in Sirkazhi, set to be built at a cost of ₹1.5 crore in honor of Ranganathan’s immense contributions to the field.
Highlighting the advancements in higher education, Minister Chezhiaan remarked on the increasing enrollment rates in Tamil Nadu. He proudly noted that Bharathidasan University had achieved a commendable 36th place nationally, reflecting the institution’s commitment to educational excellence and its role in shaping the future of students in the region.
The event also served to recognize and celebrate individuals who have made significant impacts on library services. Notable awards included the S.R. Ranganathan Award, presented to Pudukkottai Gnanalaya Krishnamurthi, while the Library Service Award went to Thangam Moorthi, president of the Pudukkottai Readers’ Circle. The Best Public Librarian Award was awarded to retired Tiruchi District Library Officer A. Po. Sivakumar, and P. Ravichandran, a retired professor from Annamalai University, received the Best Professor in Library Science Award.
In a committed effort to promote literacy and education, the university also donated a collection of books to the Adi Dravidar School in Kattur, Tiruchi, further emphasizing its dedication to community service and educational outreach.
This year’s observance of National Librarian’s Day not only honors Ranganathan’s legacy but also showcases the pivotal role that libraries play in enhancing education and fostering a love for reading among the populace. As the digital landscape continues to transform how information is accessed and consumed, events like these remind us of the enduring value of traditional library services, bridging the gap between heritage and innovation.
In conclusion, Bharathidasan University’s celebration was a fitting tribute to S.R. Ranganathan and a celebration of the profound influence libraries have in our communities. The university’s initiative to honor outstanding individuals in library science complements its broader mission of promoting knowledge and learning in Tamil Nadu.
