Nagaland Prepares for Intense Rainstorms: Urgent Advisory Issued!
The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has issued a weather alert for most districts in the state from August 16 to 19, warning of moderate to heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms. This advisory follows forecasts of intense rainfall in several regions, raising concerns about potential flooding and disruptions to essential services.
Heavy rains and thunderstorms are expected specifically in Kiphire, Phek, Zunheboto, Tuensang, Mokokchung, and Kohima on August 16. The following day, Chümoukedima, Dimapur, Longleng, Niuland, and Kiphire may also face significant downpours, while other areas could experience light to moderate rain that might intensify.
Authorities have noted that Nagaland’s lowland and foothill districts, including Dimapur, Niuland, Chümoukedima, Bhandari, Baghty, Tizit, and Tuli, are particularly susceptible to waterlogging and flash floods due to heavy rainfall in the hills.
The NSDMA urges residents to undertake preventive measures, such as securing important documents, evacuating low-lying areas if necessary, avoiding contact with floodwaters, disconnecting electrical appliances from ground level, and treating drinking water by boiling or chlorinating.
Additionally, the department has instructed all District Disaster Management Authorities and related agencies to remain on high alert to protect lives and property during this monsoon season. Citizens are cautioned to stay vigilant, avoid flooded roads, and be mindful of open drainage holes or flood channels.
In case of emergencies, residents can reach out to the State Emergency Operation Centre’s toll-free helpline at 1070.
