Tragic Incident in Tripura: Mother Arrested for Infant’s Death
Agartala: A woman has been arrested by Tripura Police for allegedly murdering her five-month-old child in Sepahijala district, as confirmed by officials on Monday. The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Suchitra Debbarma, reportedly killed her infant to enable her plan to elope with a man she had been involved with for a year.
The police were alerted by neighbors about the situation, prompting a team led by officer-in-charge Tapas Das from the Sonamura police station to visit Suchitra’s residence in Rampadapara on Sunday. Upon arrival, they discovered the baby lying on a bed, while the mother was nowhere to be found. The child was immediately taken to the Sonamura sub-divisional hospital, where doctors unfortunately declared the infant dead. A post-mortem examination is set to be conducted soon.
During initial inquiries, authorities indicated that Suchitra strangled her child while her husband, Amit Debbarma, was away working at a rubber plantation. “Prima facie, it appeared that Suchitra strangled her child to death when her husband went out for work,” Das stated. Suchitra was later apprehended in the village.
In a subsequent interrogation, she confessed to the crime, revealing that she killed the baby as part of her scheme to run away with her lover.
