Mamata Honors Khudiram Bose: Powerful Tribute Sparks Outrage Against Kesari Chapter 2 Filmmakers
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee commemorated freedom fighter Khudiram Bose on his death anniversary, August 11, 2025, while expressing her outrage over the misrepresentation of Bengali revolutionaries in the Hindi film “Kesari Chapter 2.” Banerjee criticized the film for inaccurately naming Khudiram Bose as “Khudiram Singh” and depicting Barindra Kumar Ghosh as “Birendra Kumar” hailing from Amritsar, calling such distortions unacceptable.
In a heartfelt tribute, Banerjee described Bose as “a symbol of patriotism and supreme sacrifice.” She took to X to voice her concerns, stating, “Why are those who gave their lives for independence being insulted? Our indomitable youth from Medinipur has been portrayed as a boy from Punjab. Unbearable! But we have always paid tribute to this man.” The CM emphasized the importance of honoring historical figures accurately and preserving their legacy.
The criticism of “Kesari Chapter 2” has serious implications; an FIR was registered against the film’s producers at Bidhannagar South police station in June. The complaint highlighted the film’s alleged historical inaccuracies concerning Khudiram Bose and Barindra Kumar Ghosh, igniting a wider conversation about the portrayal of freedom fighters in popular media.
Khudiram Bose, one of India’s youngest freedom fighters, was executed at the age of 18 on August 11, 1908, for his involvement in the Muzaffarpur bomb case. In her remarks, Banerjee outlined the efforts initiated by the West Bengal government to honor Bose’s legacy. This includes the Mahabani Development Authority’s initiatives aimed at revitalizing his birthplace, Mahabani, with projects such as a statue in his honor, renovations to the local library, and the construction of a spacious auditorium, conference room, and an open-air stage. The government has also modernized Khudiram Park and enhanced the area with new lighting.
Furthermore, Banerjee highlighted that a Metro station in Kolkata has been named after Khudiram Bose, a gesture that underscores the state’s commitment to remembering this great revolutionary. “We are proud to honor Khudiram, not just in Medinipur, but across Kolkata,” she remarked.
As tributes flowed in from various quarters, significant observances were also held in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, where Bose was hanged. District Magistrate Subrata Sen, along with Senior Superintendent of Police Sushil Kumar and community members, gathered at the central jail to pay their respects. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his deputy CMs also participated in commemoration events in Patna, marking the anniversary of a tragic incident during the Quit India Movement, where seven individuals were killed by British forces as they attempted to hoist the Tricolour near the Patna Secretariat.
