Imphal Autorickshaw Services Halted: Drivers Protest Assault Incident
Autorickshaw services in Imphal, Manipur, were brought to a halt on Sunday as over 600 drivers protested in a one-day strike against the violent assault of a fellow driver. The strike was organized by two unions: the Mayang Langjing Semgat Sagat Nupi Lup and the Uripok Kangchup Road Mega Diesel Association. They held a sit-in protest at the Mayang Langjing Tamang Community Hall, expressing their condemnation of the attack.
The victim, H. Bhogeshwar, 45, who serves as the President of the Uripok Kangchup Road Mega Diesel Association, was assaulted following a minor road accident that occurred on July 25. According to sources, he was returning from Imphal to the Mayang Langjing Auto Parking when his vehicle was struck by a two-wheeler, operated by local resident Thoudam Romesh, 25. Following the collision, Romesh allegedly attacked Bhogeshwar, who is currently receiving medical treatment at JNIMS Hospital.
Khoirom Sanatombi, a local woman leader, revealed that efforts by the Meira Paibis, a women’s group in the area, to mediate and peacefully resolve the issue were rejected by Romesh’s family, who insisted that the matter should be addressed in court. Sanatombi described the incident as tragic, emphasizing that while vehicles can be repaired, human lives should not be treated as mere machines. Protesters are calling for immediate action against Romesh and demanding that he cover Bhogeshwar’s medical expenses.
