Delhi Congress President Devender Yadav has announced a protest outside the Assembly on Monday, coinciding with the start of the Monsoon Session. Yadav expressed deep concern over the plight of slum dwellers, noting that many live in a “constant fear of displacement.” He criticized the current central government led by the BJP, claiming it has displaced around 15,000 families since taking power. “Relocation should only occur if adequate alternative arrangements are in place,” he insisted, emphasizing that slum residents deserve stability.
The Delhi Congress chief referenced a statement made by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta following an address by Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha, where Gupta asserted that no slums in Delhi would be demolished. However, she also indicated that slums located along railway lines could not be saved, leaving many residents concerned about their futures. Yadav challenged the Delhi government to clarify its stance on slum dwellers, urging transparency instead of political posturing that endangers the lives of vulnerable populations.
Moreover, Yadav accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of neglecting thousands of housing units constructed under the Rajiv Rattan Housing Scheme-a program aimed at improving living conditions for the economically disadvantaged. He claimed these flats, locked away for 11 years, should be repaired and made available to current slum residents.
In a related move, Chief Minister Gupta inspected government flats built for economically weaker sections in Sultanpuri, which are reportedly in poor condition. During her visit, she reassured citizens that steps are being taken to address the pressing demand for one million housing units.
