Mizoram authorities are set to record the biometrics of displaced individuals from Myanmar and Bangladesh seeking refuge in the state. Training for officers involved in this initiative is currently underway across Mizoram, with the enrollment process expected to commence at the end of July.
The recording of biometric and demographic data will primarily be conducted online via the foreigners’ identification portal. However, due to poor internet access in many rural areas where these displaced individuals reside, an offline mode may also be utilized.
A recent statement from the government indicated that training focused on the ‘Foreigners Identification Portal and Biometric Enrollment’ for displaced persons was held on Friday in Lunglei. This session, organized by the Lunglei District Level Committee on Myanmar and Bangladesh Refugees, aimed to prepare officers for accurate identification and enrollment of the displaced population.
Lunglei’s Additional SP K Beihmotaosa provided updates on preparations, noting the formation of ten biometric enrollment teams and the requisition of necessary equipment from the Home Department. The enrollment drive will begin this month, starting with the Ramthar Camp and expanding to eight other camps within the district.
During the training event, a total of 27 team members participated in practical and interactive sessions led by master trainers. Officials confirmed that similar training sessions are also being conducted in other districts.
The Home Department reports that over 32,000 Myanmar nationals currently reside in Mizoram’s 11 districts. This figure fluctuates daily as some individuals frequently travel back to Myanmar and return. Additionally, there are 2,371 Bangladeshi nationals from the Chittagong Hill Tracts living in the state. More than 7,000 Zo ethnic individuals from Manipur, displaced due to ethnic violence, have also sought shelter in Mizoram.
Myanmar nationals, primarily from Chin state, fled to Mizoram following a military coup in February 2021. Meanwhile, asylum seekers from Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts came to the state after a military operation against an ethnic insurgent group in 2022. It is noteworthy that the Chins from Myanmar, the Bawm tribe from Bangladesh, and the Kuki-zo people from Manipur share close ethnic ties with the Mizos.
