Extreme athlete Felix Baumgartner, renowned for being the first skydiver to exceed the speed of sound during a 24-mile jump from the stratosphere, tragically passed away on Thursday along the eastern coast of Italy at the age of 56. Italian firefighters reported that a paraglider crashed into the side of a swimming pool in the city of Porto Sant Elpidio. The mayor confirmed Baumgartner’s death through a social media post, expressing the deep sorrow felt within the community.
“Our community is deeply affected by the tragic disappearance of Felix Baumgartner, a figure of global prominence, a symbol of courage and passion for extreme flight,” stated Mayor Massimiliano Ciarpella.
Known as “Fearless Felix,” Baumgartner astounded the world in 2012 by breaking the sound barrier unaided. He leaped from a capsule that was elevated over 24 miles (39 kilometers) above Earth by a massive helium balloon in New Mexico. During his record-setting nine-minute descent, he reached a peak speed of 843.6 mph, breaking the sound barrier at 1.25 times the speed of sound. His team later reported that he experienced a potentially hazardous flat spin while still supersonic, spinning for 13 seconds.
Reflecting on his experience, Baumgartner said, “When I was standing there on top of the world, you become so humble, you do not think about breaking records anymore, you do not think about gaining scientific data. The only thing you want is to come back alive.” His jump set the highest-ever altitude record for a skydiver, surpassing the previous record held by Joe Kittinger since 1960, who advised Baumgartner during his historic leap.
Baumgartner’s record stood for two years until Google executive Alan Eustace set new benchmarks for the highest free-fall jump and greatest free-fall distance. Millions of viewers witnessed his daring jump via a live stream on YouTube, where he confidently showcased a thumbs-up before activating his parachute and celebrating his landing.
A former Austrian military parachutist, Baumgartner completed thousands of jumps from planes and iconic landmarks, including the Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil. In 2003, he gained attention by crossing the English Channel using a carbon fiber wing after being released from a plane. Recently, he collaborated with The Flying Bulls, performing as a helicopter stunt pilot in various shows across Europe.
After his groundbreaking jump in 2012, Baumgartner described the sensation of traveling faster than sound as “hard to describe because you don’t feel it.” He added, “Sometimes we have to get really high to see how small we are.” His remarkable achievements and adventurous spirit made him a significant figure in extreme sports, inspiring many around the world.
