Nagaon Municipality’s Urgent Eviction Drive: Clearing Footpath Traders for Safer Streets
Nagaon Municipality executed an unannounced eviction drive today in the town’s commercial areas, targeting unauthorized vendors and traders occupying public footpaths. This action aimed to enhance pedestrian movement and address long-standing grievances from local residents.
Municipal officials reported that numerous traders had been obstructing the footpaths and roadside edges to conduct their business, which significantly hindered public mobility and posed safety risks. Despite previous warnings and notices, these encroachers persisted in their activities, necessitating stringent measures from the administration.
The operation focused on key commercial zones where footpath encroachments were particularly problematic. Municipal workers, supported by enforcement personnel, dismantled temporary stalls and cleared obstructive items from the sidewalks.
Community groups, senior citizens, and various local organizations had repeatedly raised concerns with the municipality regarding the worsening encroachment issue. They indicated that the illegal occupation of public walkways was complicating daily commutes, especially for elderly individuals and schoolchildren.
A senior municipal official commented that today’s efforts are part of a larger initiative to reclaim public spaces and facilitate smoother transit throughout the city. He emphasized that further actions will be taken if vendors continue to disregard public space regulations.
The municipality has called upon all traders and vendors to respect public property and avoid future occupations of footpaths.
