Unlock Your Future: Over 35,000 Candidates Celebrate Tentative Allotment in Round 1 of TNEA Counselling for Computer Science and ECE!
Computer Science and Engineering and Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) have emerged as the standout choices for engineering aspirants in Tamil Nadu, with 35,125 candidates receiving tentative seat allotments following the first round of counselling for the Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) for the academic year 2025-26. This year, there has been a noticeable increase in interest for the ECE stream compared to the previous year, signifying a shift in candidate preferences.
Education counsellor R. Ashwin reported that ECE has overtaken both Information Technology (IT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) as the top choice among students. The trend observed from the first round of allocations indicates that candidates are gravitating towards core engineering disciplines, with nearly all seats filled in the leading colleges across Computer Science, ECE, Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE), Mechanical Engineering, and Civil Engineering.
Cities like Chennai and Coimbatore remain highly sought-after destinations for engineering candidates, reflecting a concentrated preference for the top institutions located there. The premier constituent colleges of Anna University, including the College of Engineering, Guindy (CEG), and the Madras Institute of Technology (MIT), have retained their positions at the top of candidates’ lists. Meanwhile, other engineering colleges affiliated with Anna University have ranked lower in desirability.
In terms of allocations, TNEA officials noted that among the allotments, 32,663 candidates were from the general category, while 2,462 were from government schools, benefiting from a 7.5% reservation. The provisional allotment order is set to be released for candidates who confirm their tentative seats by Friday evening.
Candidates unsatisfied with their initial allotment and who have opted for an upgrade need to await the results of the residual seats after the first round concludes on July 23. Additionally, in the vocational stream, 1,416 candidates received tentative allotments, which include 214 from the government schools reservation category.
With the competition for engineering seats intensifying, this year’s TNEA reveals shifting trends in student preferences, particularly towards circuit-related courses. As the admission process progresses, it will be interesting to see how these trends evolve and if they herald a longer-term shift in engineering disciplines in Tamil Nadu.
