Iran’s Emotional Farewell: Honoring Fallen Commanders and Scientists
Iran held a state funeral on Saturday for military commanders and nuclear scientists who lost their lives during a recent 12-day conflict with Israel. The ceremony in Tehran was attended by the families of the deceased and prominent Iranian officials, including President Masoud Pezeshkian, Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, and Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi. Notably, senior advisor to Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Shamkhani, was also present despite being severely injured in Israeli airstrikes.
The conflict escalated on June 13 when Israel conducted extensive airstrikes targeting various locations in Iran, including nuclear and military sites. These attacks resulted in the deaths of several high-ranking officials, including military leaders and nuclear scientists, as well as civilian casualties. In retaliation, Iran launched multiple waves of missile and drone strikes against Israel. Following days of hostilities, a ceasefire was reached on Tuesday.
During the funeral, mourners waved Iranian flags and shouted slogans against Israel and the United States. They carried portraits of those they deemed “martyred,” including Chief Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Hossein Salami and Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Mohammad Bagheri, among others.
Iran’s Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni, addressing the crowd, stated that the United States and Israel had demonstrated a failure to honor their commitments. He emphasized the readiness of the Iranian armed forces to deliver a decisive response to any hostile actions from adversaries.
The burial of the officials is set for Sunday, with reports indicating that General Bagheri will be interred alongside his wife and daughter. The funeral ceremony, which began at 8 A.M. local time at Enghelab (Revolution) Square, was described by Iranian state media as one of the most significant public funerals in recent history. After formal tributes, a large procession moved towards Azadi Square, about 11 kilometers away, for additional rites.
