Reddit at 20: Defending Your Data and Battling AI with Groundbreaking Innovation!

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman recently marked a milestone for the company as it went public with an initial share price of $47 on March 21, 2024, at the New York Stock Exchange. For two decades, Reddit has proudly claimed the title of “the front page of the internet,” but rising artificial intelligence (AI) technologies present a new challenge that could disrupt its dominance.

As social media has evolved-from the decline of platforms like MySpace and Digg to the surge in mobile and short-form video content-Reddit has thrived with a daily user base exceeding 108 million. Users engage in over 100,000 subreddit communities, engaging in straightforward text discussions about their interests. These user-generated comments have become invaluable data in an AI-driven landscape where chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini threaten to absorb information that once drew users to websites like Reddit.

In a recent conversation with analysts, Huffman acknowledged the challenges posed by AI while emphasizing the potential opportunities they present. He highlighted that amid the ongoing reshaping of the search ecosystem, Reddit’s user-generated content can provide a distinct voice compared to the “sterile answers” produced by AI. “There will always be a need, a desire for people to talk to people about stuff,” Huffman said, indicating a strategic focus on fostering genuine human interaction.

However, the ease of obtaining information from AI has led some experts to express concerns. Ann Smarty, a reputation management consultant, pointed out that many users take the path of least resistance, often opting for quick answers from AI rather than engaging in longer discussions on Reddit. “People do not want to click; they just want those quick answers,” Smarty observed.

In a move signaling the high value it places on its data, Reddit filed a lawsuit against AI startup Anthropic earlier this month. The company claims that Anthropic engaged in illicit business by scraping data from its subreddits to enhance its AI models without permission. While some authors have pursued legal action against AI firms based on copyright violations, Reddit has initiated its suit around unfair business practices, specifically regarding Anthropic’s purported exploitation of data it does not own.

Jason Bloom, an intellectual property expert, asserted that Reddit’s extensive collection of user discussions provides high-quality material for training AI, making the platform an attractive target for those developing chatbots. Although Reddit has licensing agreements with OpenAI and Google, it maintains that Anthropic’s actions interfere with its relationships with users, which are critical for its business model.

Anthropic, responding to the lawsuit, expressed its disagreement with Reddit’s claims and intends to defend itself vigorously. The conflict highlights a growing tension between traditional content owners and platforms hosting user-generated material.

Amid these challenges, Reddit is not remaining passive. In December, it launched its own AI-driven service, Reddit Answers, utilizing technology from both OpenAI and Google. Unlike generic chatbots, Reddit Answers relies exclusively on user-sourced content, redirecting users to original discussions for context. Huffman believes this solution blends both the reliability of user interaction with AI’s efficiency, serving over 1 million users weekly.

While investors express concern about AI’s impact on growth, analysts like Seaport’s Aaron Kessler argue that Reddit’s unique original content and user intentionality make it a compelling platform for advertisers, enriching the site’s commercial potential and longevity in an increasingly competitive landscape.
