Ferry services on the Brahmaputra River near Majuli, the world’s largest river island, have been suspended after over 150 wild elephants were spotted dangerously close to the ferry route. This situation posed serious safety concerns, prompting authorities to take precautionary measures.
The ferry line, which connects Kamalabari Ghat in Majuli with Nimatighat in Jorhat, is vital for locals and tourists alike. The herd’s appearance was first noted on Thursday and again on Friday, leading to an immediate halt in ferry operations. As a result, several ferries and their passengers were left stranded in the river while forest and district authorities assessed the risks associated with this unusual wildlife movement.
The presence of elephant calves in the herd heightened the sensitivity of the situation, raising fears of potential stampedes or unpredictable behavior that could endanger human lives. In light of these circumstances, passengers and residents are urging the Majuli Forest Department and local administration to swiftly intervene and safely guide the herd away from populated areas, as ferry services are essential for transportation on the island.
Officials have responded by stating that they are actively monitoring the situation and coordinating intervention efforts. Teams from the forest department are focused on ensuring the safety of both the elephants and those stranded on the ferries.
