Delhi CM Inspires Hope as Yoga on Riverbank Highlights Successful Efforts to Revitalize the Yamuna!

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta led a vibrant yoga demonstration along the banks of the Yamuna River on Saturday, coinciding with the annual International Yoga Day. The event was attended by notable figures including Cabinet Minister Kapil Mishra, North East Delhi MP Manoj Tiwari, Deputy Speaker Mohan Singh Bisht, and Chief Secretary Dharmendra, alongside enthusiastic schoolchildren.

After the demonstration in Sonia Vihar, Gupta emphasized the government’s ongoing efforts to clean the Yamuna, showcasing the river’s improved condition. “We want to convey to the people of Delhi that the Yamuna is getting cleaner,” she stated, highlighting initiatives such as the decentralization of sewage treatment plants (STPs), the installation of new sewer lines, and enhancements to the water pipeline system.

Cleaning the Yamuna was a significant campaign promise from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during the Delhi Assembly elections. Gupta detailed that the government is executing a total of 303 drainage projects with an investment of approximately ₹8,000 crore. The plans encompass major drain redevelopment, modern water pump installations, drain desilting, stormwater drainage system expansion, and a scientific approach to drainage network management.

“The Yamuna is part of Delhi’s identity; the city thrives along its banks,” Gupta remarked, assuring residents that the stretch in Sonia Vihar is cleaned and pledging to extend these efforts to other areas. She noted that innovative technology has enabled the removal of thousands of tonnes of water hyacinth from the river, and revealed plans for a future cruise service on the Yamuna.

Gupta did not hold back in her criticism of previous governments led by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress, stating, “Many administrations have come and gone, but they did nothing for Maa Yamuna.” She urged citizens to not regard yoga as a one-time event but rather to integrate it into their daily lives.

The Chief Minister attributed the global recognition of yoga to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, noting his initiatives promoting millet consumption, reducing oil dependency, and encouraging healthy lifestyles. She expressed her admiration for the sight of young participants practicing yoga on boats, deeming it “profoundly inspiring.”

Gupta highlighted that this year’s celebrations saw participation exceeding 20,000 residents across the city, marking a new milestone for the Delhi government in promoting health and wellness through yoga.

Her efforts reflect a broader commitment not only to the environment but also to the well-being of Delhi’s citizens, merging cultural practices with proactive governance. As Delhi continues these initiatives, the emphasis on health and ecological stewardship remains central to the administration’s agenda amidst ongoing urban challenges.

With these ongoing projects, Gupta is confident that the future of the Yamuna will not only benefit its ecosystem but also enrich the lives of all who reside in the capital.
