Transforming Lives: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta Eyes Mumbai’s “Dharavi Model” to Revolutionize 675 Slum Clusters in Delhi

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta highlighted on Friday the government’s interest in exploring Mumbai’s “Dharavi model” as a potential framework for redeveloping 675 slum clusters across the national capital. Speaking at a yoga event in the city, Ms. Gupta emphasized the need for innovative solutions to address the housing crisis in Delhi while ensuring the safety of residents.

Addressing concerns surrounding the demolition of slum areas, Gupta expressed that misinformation has been circulating about these actions. She urged the public to prioritize safety, stating, “If you construct a house near a railway line, the Chief Minister will not save you. If a railway accident happens or someone dies on the railway track, who will be responsible?” Her remarks reflect a broader commitment to public safety amid ongoing discussions about urban redevelopment.

While she reiterated that her administration is not focused on indiscriminate demolitions, Gupta underscored the importance of transitioning residents from slum conditions to safer living environments. “A situation should not arise wherein we keep on giving houses but people do not vacate slums,” she explained, emphasizing that the goal is to facilitate a more sustainable urban landscape without compromising safety.

The Dharavi model, known for its ambitious redevelopment plans, is being executed through a Special Purpose Vehicle set up via a collaboration between the Adani Group and the Maharashtra government. On a different note, when questioned regarding the ongoing Anti-Corruption Branch investigation into Aam Aadmi Party leader Manish Sisodia concerning a classroom construction scam, the Chief Minister did not shy away from accountability. “Everyone will have to face the music. [Former Chief Minister] Arvind Kejriwal will also have to return from Punjab. We do not want fugitive leaders,” Gupta asserted. Her comments reflect an increasing scrutiny on political accountability and governance in the capital, highlighting the intricate relationship between leadership and public perception.
