Urgent Call: BJP’s Ground-Up Approach to M’laya’s Education Crisis
BJP Meghalaya has raised alarms over the state’s poor performance in the recently released Performing Grade Index (PGI) report for 2023-24, which ranks Meghalaya at the bottom for school education at the district level. The party is urging the MDA Government to initiate urgent corrective measures starting from the foundation of the education system. Spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang emphasized the need for a comprehensive overhaul of the education sector, beginning with the lower primary level. He outlined essential steps such as appointing qualified teachers, improving infrastructure, and creating a more engaging learning environment to better equip students for their academic journeys.
Kharkrang also stressed the importance of regular inspections in schools and called for the elimination of proxy teachers, advocating for every school to maintain acceptable standards of infrastructure. He pointed out that nations with successful educational systems began their progress by investing in education and urged the Meghalaya government to follow that example.
In response to the PGI report, Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma attributed the state’s low ranking to outdated data and structural difficulties, suggesting these factors skew the perception of the state’s educational improvements. However, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has countered this narrative, asserting that the dismal PGI ranking clearly reflects the failures of the current Conrad Sangma-led administration. The opposition party criticized the recent rise in matriculation pass percentages, claiming it resulted from mass promotions and a deliberate lowering of academic standards, rather than any genuine enhancement in educational quality.
Moreover, TMC representatives argued that superficial statistics cannot mask the deeper issues plaguing Meghalaya’s education system, such as insufficient staffing, disheartened teachers, inadequate infrastructure, and ineffective governance. They have demanded that the government take the PGI findings seriously, advocating for a transparent white paper detailing teacher recruitment, infrastructure investment, fund utilization, and alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP).
