Electricity consumption across PJM Interconnection LLC, the largest power grid in the U.S. serving nearly 20% of the population from Washington, D.C. to Illinois, is projected to hit a 12-year high due to an impending heatwave. According to the latest data from PJM, peak electricity demand could rise to 158.5 gigawatts around 5 p.m. ET, marking the highest hourly demand since July 2013. This projection exceeds earlier forecasts for this summer. For context, the all-time record for electricity use was nearly 165.6 gigawatts, set in 2006.
The resurgence in demand comes after several years of stagnation, attributed to a surge in new data centers primarily in Northern Virginia. While the growth of more energy-efficient appliances and light bulbs had stalled demand for some time, that trend is reversing as businesses and households increasingly rely on digital infrastructure.
Alongside rising consumption, electricity costs are also climbing. This follows a record-high auction last year for energy supplies, which began on June 1. For instance, power prices for Monday have soared to an average of $200 per megawatt-hour in exchange-traded contracts-an increase of nearly five times from the previous day’s pricing, according to Gary Cunningham, director of market research at Tradition Energy.
Cunningham noted that the impending heatwave will blanket a swath of the U.S. from the central plains to metropolitan areas like New York City. However, he pointed out that the timing could prevent some regions from reaching their historical high consumption levels. The East Coast, particularly areas dependent on PJM, can expect significantly higher and more volatile electricity prices compared to parts of the Midwest.
