Aizawl: Lt. Colonel Clement Lalhmingthanga, a legislator from the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) and a retired Army officer, announced on Tuesday that recruitment for the newly sanctioned Mizo Territorial Army (MTA) will commence in July. During a press conference, Clement, who is at the forefront of the MTA’s coordination and land search committee, stated that two companies of the Territorial Army are planned, with recruitment for the first company set to roll out in phases starting next month. The initial phase aims to recruit 70 personnel, while a full company comprises 102 soldiers, along with a Commanding Officer and four Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs).
The recruitment drive will be accessible to Mizo youth aged 18 to 42 who have completed Class 10. Clement noted that special provisions would be made for ex-servicemen, their children, and athletes. Recruits will be trained at the Assam Rifles Centre in Shillong.
Efforts are currently ongoing to secure suitable land for the MTA headquarters, with several village councils indicating their willingness to offer land for its establishment. The central government has approved the MTA as part of a strategic move to tackle drug trafficking and bolster law and order in the region. This initiative is also anticipated to create substantial employment opportunities for local youth.
In May, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma met with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi to discuss the forthcoming recruitment. He expressed appreciation to both the Defence and Union Home Ministers, Amit Shah, for their instrumental support in forming the MTA battalion. Lalduhoma also highlighted the dual benefits of this initiative: enhancing national security and providing jobs for Mizo youth.
