Unstoppable Success: Nintendo’s Switch 2 Soars with Record-Breaking 3.5 Million Sales!

Nintendo’s highly anticipated Switch 2 has experienced a phenomenal launch, selling over 3.5 million units within just four days of its release on June 5, 2025. The demand has been staggering, leading major U.S. retailers to display “out of stock” notices on their online platforms. With an ambitious goal of reaching 15 million units sold by the end of the fiscal year in March 2026, Nintendo appears to be on track to achieve this milestone.

Industry analysts are optimistic, predicting that the momentum will likely continue. “The market expected a record from Nintendo, and as it turns out, Nintendo delivered,” said Serkan Toto, CEO of Kantan Games, in a statement to CNBC. He believes that the initial demand will sustain itself, and he anticipates that total sales could surpass 20 million units within the Switch 2’s first year. Similarly, David Gibson, a senior research analyst at MST Financial, shares this view, projecting 20 million sales by March 2026.

The excitement surrounding the Switch 2 has led to fans queuing for hours at Nintendo stores, eager for the midnight launch event. “Fans around the world are showing their enthusiasm for Nintendo Switch 2 as an upgraded way to play at home and on the go,” remarked Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s President and COO. He expressed gratitude for the enthusiastic response from consumers.

Despite the record-breaking start, concerns over stock shortages have emerged. Retail giants such as Walmart, GameStop, Target, and Best Buy faced depletion of inventory, and many consoles were reportedly sold out online. Nintendo is aware of these challenges; Bowser previously stated the company was working closely with retail partners to ensure sufficient supply. However, President Shuntaro Furukawa noted that demand in Japan exceeded expectations, with 2.2 million individuals vying for the opportunity to purchase the console on launch day.

Toto from Kantan Games anticipates persistent shortages in Japan, but suggests that availability in other regions is likely to be more manageable. “For fans outside Japan, those who really want the console and are willing to invest time can secure one,” he explained. Although it may take some time, initial indications suggest that supply levels are expected to be more robust than during the original Switch’s launch in 2017.

Adding to the challenges are ongoing tariff issues stemming from former President Donald Trump’s “reciprocal tariffs,” which could impact pricing strategies. In April, Nintendo announced a delay in U.S. preorders while assessing the potential effects of these tariffs. Currently, the Switch 2 is priced at $449 in the U.S., making it Nintendo’s most expensive console to date.

Bowser indicated that the company is monitoring tariff developments closely before making any decisions about future price adjustments. Should tariffs be resolved favorably, MST Financial’s Gibson posits that the price of the Switch 2 could potentially decrease.

Building on the success of its predecessor, the Switch 2 boasts a larger screen and enhanced performance. It also introduces the innovative GameChat2 feature, enabling players to voice or video chat with friends while sharing game screens.

As Nintendo aims to recapture the magic of the original Switch, which sold 15 million units in its first year and ultimately became the company’s second-best-selling device, all eyes will be on the Switch 2’s journey in the months ahead.

In summary, Nintendo’s successful launch fuels high expectations, yet challenges in supply and tariffs remain areas to watch closely as the company navigates this exciting new chapter in gaming.
