Kamal Haasan, the renowned actor-turned-politician and chief of the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), is once again making headlines, this time amidst a significant language controversy that has overshadowed the release of his latest film, “Thug Life.” Despite the ongoing debate around linguistic impositions, Haasan has made his views clear on the need for linguistic freedom, particularly emphasizing his support for states resisting the imposition of Hindi in the South.
In a recent statement to PTI, Haasan expressed solidarity with residents of Punjab, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, asserting, “Without imposition, we will learn. Don’t impose because this is ultimately education, and we must take the shortest route to education… and not put hurdles in its way.” His remarks resonate with the longstanding opposition from the ruling DMK party in Tamil Nadu, which has criticized the three-language policy introduced in the National Education Policy (NEP) as an attempt by the BJP-led NDA government to “impose Hindi.” This accusation has been consistently denied by the central government.
The controversy surrounding Haasan escalated with the release of “Thug Life,” which marks his 234th film in a celebrated 65-year career. His comments asserting that Kannada originated from Tamil did not sit well with some in Karnataka, leading to the state’s film chamber staging a boycott against the film’s release unless he offered an apology. In response, Haasan remained defiant, referencing his iconic role in the 1981 Hindi film “Ek Duuje Ke Liye,” which featured a Tamil protagonist in love with a Hindi-speaking neighbor.
Legal obstacles appeared when the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce demanded an apology following Haasan’s provocative statement, which ultimately resulted in “Thug Life” not being released in the state. His production company, Raajkamal Films International, sought judicial protection for the film’s release through a plea to the Karnataka High Court, but following critical remarks from the court, the producers confirmed that the film would not be screened in Karnataka.
Highlighting the detrimental effects of imposing a singular language on education, the 70-year-old actor emphasized that such actions only hinder learning. “This is not only a place which is resenting imposition,” he added in his address to PTI, underscoring the wider implications of the debate. Haasan, who has achieved pan-India fame with films like “Nayakan,” “Thevar Magan,” and “Chachi 420,” believes that for a true international breakthrough, learning a common language, such as English, is essential. He pointed out the practical aspects of language acquisition, noting that English has become a staple over 350 years, and replacing it abruptly could lead to increased illiteracy, particularly in Tamil Nadu.
