Travellers visiting Puducherry, a historically rich former French colony, will soon have the opportunity to explore its picturesque beaches and charming heritage architecture in fully-equipped camper vans. These modern vehicles come with a host of amenities, including queen-size convertible beds, bathrooms, smart televisions, speaker systems, air conditioning, and kitchenettes. Puducherry is emerging as a notable player in India’s burgeoning caravan tourism sector, which is increasingly seen as a luxury experience.
In a strategic move to enhance its tourism allure, the Puducherry Transport Department has introduced a formal tax structure for camper vans and caravans. This initiative not only facilitates the issuance of permits for locally registered vehicles but also extends to those from other states, offering convenient tax options for rentals covering durations of three, seven, or 30 days. Transport Commissioner A.S. Sivakumar explained that the new tax policy encompasses vehicles categorized as camper vans or caravans, classified under Public Service Vehicle, Contract Carriage, or Transport segments, regardless of seating capacity.
The tax framework is set at ₹32,000 annually for light and medium vehicles, while heavy vehicles incur an annual fee of ₹48,000. Rentals can vary from ₹860 to ₹4,200 for light and medium vehicles over three, seven, and 30-day periods, and from ₹1,340 to ₹8,800 for heavy vehicles. Sivakumar emphasized that this structured approach is anticipated to significantly enhance tourism, particularly in the road travel and adventure tourism sectors, allowing explorers from across India to experience Puducherry at their own pace.
Puducherry’s reputation as a favoured location for film shoots is also expected to benefit from this initiative. Known for its unique blend of French colonial architecture, stunning beaches, and cultural heritage, the area is increasingly sought after for film and advertisement productions. New temporary tax permits will simplify the logistics for film crews bringing in mobile vans and support vehicles, encouraging filmmakers to choose Puducherry as their primary setting.
An official remarked that this development is set to attract road trip enthusiasts and eco-tourists, boosting mobile tourism and camper-based holidays while also increasing the number of film production teams in the region. This growth will enhance Puducherry’s profile as a dynamic creative hub.
